Why the name “Serinus”?
Serinus was named after one of the first alarm systems in history: canary birds. In Latin it is called “Serinus Canaria forma domestica”. In underground mining, they warned against carbon monoxide leakage. If the birds stopped singing, the miners would immediately leave the mining gallery. The canary is thus more than just an eponym.
